Private Sewage Systems

  The goal of the private sewage program is to eliminate disease and nuisances from improperly treated sewage from onsite wastewater disposal systems.  To ensure sewage disposal systems are properly installed and operated, our staff:

  • Reviews plans and issues permits for septic systems.
  • Inspects construction and installation of septic systems.
  • Monitors and inspects septic pumpers.
  • Investigates related complaints.
  

Installation, Maintenance and Repair

     All private sewage disposal systems within the limits of Macon County shall be installed, modified or serviced by an Illinois licensed private sewage disposal system installation contractor, or a homeowner holding legal title to a residential structure which is to be used or is used for his or her personal, single family residence.

     It shall be unlawful for any person to construct, alter or extend a sewage disposal system within Macon County unless he or she holds a valid permit issued by the Health Department.  All applications for permits must be submitted prior to construction
